How to Cut Energy Costs in Your Home

A few simple changes can add up to a big difference.

Our homes use up about one-third of the nation’s energy supply, polluting the environment and emptying wallets. But if we all cut our energy use by just 10 percent, we could avoid building 27 new power plants a year, says Jodi Beebe, energy analyst for the Utility Consumers’ Action Network, a nonprofit advocacy group in San Diego. Here’s how:

Stop Feeding Your Appliances.
A 50-watt stereo, for example, burns 18 watts per hour, even when the music’s off. Instead, plug electronics into a power strip, and then flip the off switch when you’re not using your appliances.

Do With Less Heat.
For every 10-degree temperature reduction, you use 5 percent less energy a month. Insulate your hot water tank to save more.

Install A Smart Thermostat.
A $20 programmable device lets you preset your heating and cooling systems when you’re not home for as much as a 10 percent energy savings.

Plant Trees.
Trees shade your home in the summer and block winter winds, cutting cooling and heating costs by about 25 percent.
