Practitioner Profile: Barbara Zvirzdinis of Wholistic Kinesiology

By Bill Peterson

Wholistic Kinesiology, tucked away in a comfortable suite in the Eastown section of Grand Rapids, is one of West Michigan’s smallest natural healing centers. Yet one glance at the services offered shows that physical size is inconsequential. What counts is Barbara Zvirzdinis’ skill in encompassing the whole of the kinesiology discipline. She’s been in private practice since 1998, and her path has led her on a road of comprehensive healing for herself and others in accord with natural principals.

First certified more than a decade ago in massage therapy, Zvirzdinis went on to gain certification and experience in a host of complementary healing modalities. These currently include the practice of kinesiology, reconnection healing, herbology, acutonics and reflexology. She also has extensive training in nutrition, Reiki, Quantum Touch, and vibrational medicine.

Starting out, Zvirzdinis notes that her goal "was always to make enough money to learn from great healers." She feels that learning directly from them has both given her proper direction and fortified her credentials. Being able to apply that knowledge now is the gift she shares with clients.

While she recently lent her talents as a massage therapist to Cirque de Sole and Bob Segar, the heart of her practice remains kinesiology. She sees first-hand how "Kinesiology is a remarkable tool that uses muscle testing to determine each individual's health needs." Muscle testing has long been used by chiropractors, but only recently found its way into mainstream therapy.

When she first became interested in alternative medicine in the early 1980s, Zvirzdinis immediately understood that the ability to penetrate the mysteries of balanced living and wellness requires both an open mind and a willingness to listen. She attributes her success in connecting with clients to her ability to listen without judgment, recognizing that the client intrinsically knows their own body.

"Too often we are ‘told’ by healthcare professionals what to do and left disempowered rather then feeling empowered to co-lead in the healing process with a healthcare professional," she says.

Correcting an imbalance may require us to address anything from a simple B vitamin deficiency to hormone imbalance, or a significant system imbalance that warrants further medical attention. "I obviously believe in the wholeness of the body-mind-spirit. At times, when no physical imbalance is detected, it’s revealed that a client needs only to hug their children more or take in a sunset. Such steps then relieve their symptoms."

In conclusion, Zvirzdinis states that "More often than not, when we overcome limiting beliefs and are ready to heal, true healing takes place."

Basic Tenets of Kinesiology

Our body has an amazing ability to be well if it is given the right tools. The power that made the body can heal the body.

Through muscle testing, the body can accurately tell us where imbalances are as well as what it needs.

The body runs on food, vitamins, and minerals, and if it gets the proper nutrition it will run smoothly and we will be healthy.

A lack of necessary nutrients result from poor diet, improper supplementation, hereditary factors, excess emotional, chemical, physical stress or active disease processes like parasites, viruses and yeast or fungal infections.
