Dalia Lama to Give Special Teaching in Ann Arbor

On Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20, 2008, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will visit Ann Arbor to teach "Engaging Wisdom and Compassion" at Crisler Arena on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor.

The two-day program with two sessions April 19, and one session April 20, is jointly sponsored by Jewel Heart (www.jewelheart.org), a Tibetan Buddhist Center headquartered in Ann Arbor, The Tibet Fund (www.tibetfund.org), and the Garrison Institute (www.garrison.org).

Also on April 20 at Crisler Arena, the Dalai Lama will present the University of Michigan’s Peter M. Wege Lecture on Sustainability, in celebration of Earth Day. Tickets, limited to two per person, are required and are free. They are available to the public at the University of Michigan Union Ticket Office beginning March 5, 2008. University of Michigan students, faculty and staff may obtain them beginning March 4 (Please Note: This event is "sold out" as of March 5. All 8,000 tickets were immediately snatched up by fortunate UM students, faculty and staff. Tickets for the paid events are still available through Ticketmaster).

The Dalai Lama is recognized worldwide for his compassion and tolerance, his promotion of human rights and inter-religious understanding, peace through non-violent conflict resolution and advocacy for the environment. Winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, the Dalai Lama was the recent recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award Congress can give to civilians.

Gelek Rimpoche, a distinguished Tibetan teacher, founder of Jewel Heart, and author of best seller Good Life, Good Death, says of the Dalai Lama’s visit, "We are delighted to welcome His Holiness to Jewel Heart and Michigan. His visit will uplift us during difficult times and be like the great fortune of a blue moon for spiritual practitioners of all disciplines." Jewel Heart, an educational and cultural institute, has served Ann Arbor since 1989, bringing Tibetan Buddhist traditions, wisdom and principles into contemporary Western life.

The Tibet Fund was established in 1981 under the Dalai Lama’s patronage to help the Tibetan people rebuild their lives and preserve their distinct cultural heritage and national identity.

Garrison Institute was founded in 2002 to apply the transformative wisdom of the world’s contemplative traditions to systemic challenges facing the human and natural environment.
