Can the Right Music Help Our Relationships?

Music is everywhere! Whether we hear it in the grocery store, at the mall, on radio, TV or our iPods, music influences our daily lives. Though we may not realize it, music is a powerful force that affects the human body in a holistic manner: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Music’s effect on the listener’s physical and emotional state has been well documented. Today, music production has become a science and a multi-billion dollar industry!

From the late 1980’s to mid 1990’s, I was Creative Director for Millstream Music Productions and was involved in the day-to-day operations of the company, which created commercials and film scores. Before creating a commercial for a client, I would request information about the prospective customer including their age, income, sex, and so on. Then, I would create original music and words that would foster a closer relationship between the prospective customer and the client, whose product or idea was being sold.

During the production phase, I paid close attention to the style of the music, it’s tempo, the instruments played, and the pitch ranges of those instruments. This was all done with the conscious intent of bringing forth a particular feeling in the listener. For example, a country-rock music bed with a beat rate of 108 to 120 beats per minute creates a sense of fun and excitement for a Chevy truck commercial; while a jazzy, big-band style production with a tempo of 60 to 80 beats per minute creates an air of sophistication in a Lincoln Towncar "presentation!" In film scoring, my music direction involved making sure that pitch and key changes were woven with rhythmic elements to add alternating harmony and tension in just the right places; thus evoking the desired emotions in the viewer and making the action on the screen seem bigger than life.

Music That Harmonizes Us.... E-music!

Today there is a new category of higher vibrational music that I call energy music or E-music. It is played with the intention of creating harmony inside the listener. E-music is meant to be "listened to" by your body as well as your ears and harmonizes the physical, mental and spiritual aspects.

E-music is created by playing musical instruments such as crystal bowls, flutes, and strings that produce continuous sounds containing mostly even order harmonics. Now, with the advent of modern digital keyboards, there is an even broader sound canvas for E-music players to choose from. One of many ways to derive benefits listening to E-music is to use it for chakra harmony. According to renowned healer Edgar Cayce, each chakra center has a corresponding musical note which harmonizes it. This corresponding note promotes a chakra’s balance within itself and with its neighbors. The Cayce readings also indicate that promoting such balance has a positive effect on your mental and physical health...and that’s really good news for E-music listeners!

Personal Harmony Helps Our Relationships With Others

So, am I saying that listening to E-music can help you create more romance in your life, improve your friendships and make your work atmosphere more positive? In a word....yes! We’ve all heard the phrase "like attracts like." It’s true! Creating a more harmonious inner space attracts positive people and situations that mirror that inner harmony. So then, does balancing your chakras regularly with E-music guarantee that you won’t ever have to deal with difficult people or situations? No, it doesn’t, but by regularly working on inner balance, you’ll be able to deal with outer negativity in the highest and best way, and move on quickly!

Improve Romantic Relationships with Energy Music

Married or single, young or young-at- heart, we’d all like to have a little more romance in our lives! The following method of chakra center balancing may be done using your favorite meditation or chakra balancing CD as an energy music source. Remember, E-music is a recording of musical instruments such as crystal bowls, flutes, and strings which produce continuous even harmonic type sounds ( saxophones, horns, and rock guitar are examples of instruments which produce continuous odd harmonic type sounds).

It is best not to use a musical production with percussion and rhythm, or music that contains repeating musical themes e.g. "a song." Such music may be relaxing to listen to, but will not be effective as an E-music source. For best results in this exercise, I recommend using a meditation or chakra balancing CD that has separate musical tracks recorded in the keys of D, E and F.

Although every chakra has aspects which contribute to harmonious romantic relationships, the second, third and fourth chakras are major influences. The following exercise is taken from the article Maximize Your Healing and Growth, by Cathy Chapman, Ph.D. In this article, Cathy Chapman gives specifics on how to use an E-music recording to "help balance and harmonize the emotional energy centers, also known as chakras."

Listen....Visualize....Breathe....

Second or Sacral Chakra: Located at your belly button, this chakra is associated with relationship issues, creativity and sexuality. Play a track on your CD that has music in the "Key of D." The track must be at least two minutes in length.....if it is less than two minutes long, set your CD player to "repeat" mode, so that the music plays two minutes or longer. Visualize the color orange in this area and imagine breathing in and out of the second chakra as you listen to the music.

Third or Solar Plexus Chakra: Located in the solar plexus area, this chakra is associated with personal power issues, self-confidence and intuition. Play the track on your CD that has music in the "Key of E." The track must be at least two minutes in length. As before, set your CD player to "repeat" mode if necessary. Visualize the color yellow in this area and imagine breathing in and out of the third chakra as you listen to the music.

Fourth or Heart Chakra: Located to the right of the physical heart, this chakra is associated with partnership issues, intimacy and emotional expression. Play the track on your CD that has music in the "Key of F." Again, the track should be at least two minutes long. If necessary, have your CD player repeat the track. Visualize the color green in this area and imagine breathing in and out of the fourth chakra as you listen to the music.

So, practice this exercise once or twice daily for 30 days and notice the difference it makes in your romantic relationships! Keep in mind that your whole body interacts with this kind of music. Although you can listen on headphones and get results from the exercise, try listening to the music over your stereo or boom box at a low to moderate volume....so that your body can listen, too!
