Green Degrees Save Earth a Class at a Time

Shannah Trout works as an environmental engineer at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Kennedy Space Center, where she pursues an online master’s of environmental project management and maintains the Center’s environmental compliance. "I work to advance operations to better prevent pollution, buy environmentally preferable products and recycle," she explains.

Sam Reed, an environmental engineer with a major natural gas transporter is likewise immersed in an online master’s degree with a purpose. His course of science classes and project-oriented fieldwork emphasizes hazardous waste, air and groundwater quality and interpretation of regulations.

Lisa Schnapp works on her bachelor’s in environmental studies with an eye to saving the world via sustainable development. She’s targeted strip malls. "It’s time to slow down development and commit to quality green building to last a lifetime," she says.

For these and thousands of other Earth-aware professionals, studying for a green degree arms them with practical applications they can use on the job in an effort to save the planet. With the right people in the right places, it’s not such a far-fetched notion.
