Not So Corny

Jatropha Grown Here

From China to Brazil countries have begun setting aside tens of thousands of acres for growing a plant fast-emerging as the most promising global candidate for the ideal biodiesel fuel. Companies from Europe and India have begun buying African acreage to establish plantations of this new wonder crop. The species under cultivation is Jatropha curcas. With relatively little care, this leafy bush grows in wastelands, thrives in arid regions near the equator, requires little refinement, and is inedible—so it doesn’t take food from the poor for the gas tanks of the rich.

Oil companies have expressed interest in backing essential regional processing plants. More research is needed. But projections estimate that the price of jatropha fuel oil could equal that of regular diesel.
