Fitness on the Fly
A recent study of college men training at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, has good news for busy folks hard-pressed to block out chunks of time for exercise. Kinesiologist Martin Gibala reports that after two weeks of daily workouts on stationary bicycles, change in muscle development was the same for the group that exercised in several short high-intensity bursts as for those more gently pedaling away over a longer period. In the end, the first group had trained a total of 2.5 hours while the second logged 10.5 hours, but all attained the same results.
Gibala also reports that the effects of a short interval session appear to continue for hours after the end of the workout, just as they do with a longer session. The body continues to hum along post-exercise, happily burning additional calories.
